Summer 2010

Summer’s barely started, and already there’s a lot going on! Grandmaster Moy Tung is on the road a great deal these days, providing workshop and seminar events at several school branches. He’s just back from the annual Detroit seminar. It was an exceptionally action packed event, falling as it did on the weekend of both the electronic music festival and the brand new World Steam Expo. We were also lucky enough to spend some time with SiTaiGungBok Moy Bing Wah, who was visiting from Boston.  Some of the pictures are here. But don’t worry – there are more workshops coming up soon! Check our Events page for more information!

Upcoming Events

The next big seminar will be at the Detroit school. Grandmaster Moy Tung will be there, of course. We are looking forward to a truly action packed Memorial Day Weekend event! Please check our Events page (on the left side of your screen) for contact information. The seminar will take place June 4th through June 6th. There’s a lot of road time coming up on the schedule, and plenty of workshops to go with it. We hope you can make it to at least a few of these very worthwhile events!

Pictures from the March art show are here!

Thanks to Mike Wood for taking these!

The Richmond school has just had its 24th Anniversary!

Several people from around the country were able to make it into town for this celebratory event, and it was an excellent experience. Everyone had ample opportunity to work hard at expanding and deepening kung fu knowledge, and there was a sense of real achievement during the moments of acknowledgment of all the work put in over the course of the 24 years that the school has been open.

The workshop portions were overseen by Grandmaster Moy Tung, who founded the Richmond school.

“Unconventional Art Opening: Moy Yat, a Martial Renaissance”

We’re pleased to announce the posting of the second in a series of 3 articles on Ving Tsun Kung Fu being published online at http://rvamag.com!

The second article, written by Ryan Marsh, is about “the art of the Ving Tsun system in both its physical and visual forms.”  You can check it out this article online at:

http://rvamag.com/articles/full/6777/unconventional-art-opening-moy-yat-martial-renaissance

The third article in the series will be a conversation with 3 masters about martial arts training in the modern era, martial arts in the modern media and centerline fighting.  This article will be in an interview format, conducted by Sifu Barry O’Brien & Sifu Stuart Zeno with Sigung Moy Tung!

“The Kung Fu Effect”

We’re pleased to announce that series of articles on Ving Tsun Kung Fu is in the process of being published in RVA Magazine! You can check it out the first article online at:
http://rvamag.com/articles/full/6543/kung-fu-effect

RVA Magazine ( http://rvamag.com/ ) is a free magazine published in and about Richmond, VA. It focuses on the spirit of the city – its arts, events, and activities.

The first article in the series (see link above) is titled The Kung Fu Effect, and written by Ben Dows. It’s about the effects and types of effects that kung fu training has had on his own life and experience.

The second article will be by Ryan Marsh, on the relationships between art and martial arts, especially in relation to Moy Yat’s work as an artist as well as a martial artist. That one should be coming out around March 1st.

The third article in the series will be written collaboratively by Barry O’Brien and Stuart Zeno – that one’s going to be an interview with Moy Tung.

We’ll keep you posted as the articles come out, so that you can read them all!

Pictures are in

from the Moy Go Yan art exhibition over the holidays!

Our school is also a gallery of fine art, in addition to being a gallery of martial arts. Scroll down to see photographs of our special art exhibition in honor of Moy Go Yan.

Several of the pieces were contributed by Moy Tung himself. other contributions were provided by some of the MY3 uncles as well as some of the senior MY4.

The collections included a number of paintings, including the original “lineage” paintings, plus several pieces of Moy Go Yan’s 3 dimensional work including a hand painted tea pot and a self-portrait on a china plate.

Thanks to all who contributed.

You have helped to make this art exhibition a success,  as well as providing the groundwork for more in the future!

Upcoming events

The standard calendar New Year has already passed, and the lunar New Year is still on its way. For what it’s worth, 2010 will be the year of the Metal Tiger, and there’s a lot to look forward to!

The holiday festivities aren’t over yet – the Brooklyn school will be hosting a Lunar New Year workshop the weekend of Febuary 19th (see the Events page for details), and the Moy Tung Birthday and School Anniversary weekend is coming up during the weekend of March 5th.

We’ve been letting the “art” in “martial arts” come through more than ever here at the Richmond Headquarters, with special gallery exhibitions of Moy Yat artwork.

Grandmaster Moy Tung is, of course, continuing his traveling workshop and seminar schedule in an ongoing effort to make sure that every student has all the martial arts knowledge and skill they are able to absorb.

The kids’ program continues to grow, and there’s more programs than ever to bring martial arts knowledge and skill to the younger members of our school. As you can see below, the Summer Camp program has expanded enough to start taking interns! If you or someone you know is interested in this kind of work, now is an excellent time to get on board.

Our Summer Kids Camp is looking for interns!

The Moy Yat Summer Camp for Art and Kung Fu may be the only one of its kind, making this a truly unique opportunity. The work is creative and exciting – and of course, just might look great on your resume.

Camp co-ordinator and director holds BFA and MFA from highly accredited institutions and has decided to combine her love of the arts and kids with her passion for martial arts.

This will be the 3rd summer this camp will be in session and we are looking to expand our staff as well as create unique educational opportunites for the young people in our community.

We are looking primarily for someone who really loves working with kids. Art and martial arts backgrounds may be helpful, but are not needed. You must be at least 16, or older, to be considered for an internship.

If you are interested in the fields of art, education, psychology or social sciences, exercise science – this type of internship position could be an excellent addition to your resume. Our camp director would be happy to become a mentor and write a letter of recommendation for the right candidate.

Camp dates are as follows:

Sessions #1:   June 28th-July 16th (off July 2-5th)
Session #2:   July 26th-Aug 13th
Hours:   12-5pm Mon-Fri

It would be great if candidate is available all dates, but a combination or selection of dates may also be acceptable.

There are 4 intern positions available, as well as 1 paid position.

All positions are dependent on candidates level of experience, etc.

Please e-mail resume to kungfurichmond@gmail.com to be considered for the position, along with a short letter explaining why you would make a good candidate.

This summer is shaping up to be a very active one for us here in Richmond. Our schedules will be full of classes, demos, seminars, and other events. The second annual Kung Fu Art and Kids Camp will be happening during June and July, also. Check out our calendar of events for an idea of what we’ll be doing!

This year’s anniversary seminar for the Detroit school turned out to be a very special event, with honored guest Moy Bing Wah. Photographs below!
