Richmond Kung Fu Classes

The meaning of Moy Yat Kung Fu

Ving Tsun (wing chun) martial arts students training Chum Kiu at Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu

The meaning of the Chinese term ‘Kung Fu’ can be translated into English as ‘time and energy’ or ‘hard work.’ Kung fu is whatever we do with our lives; it’s the result of the activities we engage in with our minds and bodies. The kung fu name 'Moy Yat', given by Yip Man (Ip Man) to one of his closest disciples - the man whose name the Richmond kung fu school bears - means 'number one plum tree', signifying a man with a very strong kung fu root, and honored with the number one - first place, the beginning.

If you spend time training in authentic martial arts from the Shaolin Temple in China, such as the Ving Tsun Kung Fu classes at the Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy, you will develop authentic roots in ancient Shaolin Ving Tsun Kung Fu, as well as great discipline, fitness, health and self-defense fighting skill kung fu, in turn giving you greater confidence and self-respect.

Moy Yat Ving Tsun (wing chun), as taught in the Moy Tung lineage, is simply the most efficient way of training human beings to do effective combat. This way of training the mind and body is old, but still an advanced science and technology for each new generation of human beings. Ving Tsun is the essence of the martial arts, the highest level of kung fu, complete and perfect in its simplicity.

Moy Yat Kung Fu - Pure Ving Tsun

At the Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy, we follow the tradition of “Ving Tsun Chuen Jing Tung”, meaning ‘Ving Tsun passing down authentically’, unchanged by our own ideas. The essential principles and forms of Ving Tsun (wing chun) Kung Fu have remained consistent since the beginning of the system, even as it has evolved. Ving Tsun has passed down the same way from teacher to student, sifu to todai, with each new generation of Ving Tsun Kung Fu students discovering the kung fu for themselves and making it their own through their own hard work.

There is a saying in kung fu – “Practice hard when you’re young, or you’ll have nothing when you’re old.” This is a good lesson for young people, but no one is ever too old to start Ving Tsun Kung Fu training. We have fun, challenging, genuine, informative and practical self-defense kung fu class programs for juniors and adults - Men, Women, Kids and Teens. We have separate Ving Tsun (wing chun) classes on regular schedules for all ages and groups, so everyone can focus on kung fu.
